Group 47 - Summer Research Program Intern (Tactical Microgrid Research and Development)

Date: Oct 23, 2024

Location: Lexington, MA, US

Company: MIT Lincoln Laboratory

The Energy Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory develops technology solutions that enhance the resilience and efficiency of both civilian and defense energy systems.  This includes developing advanced architectures and system designs to improve the resilience of power grids, developing new control techniques for microgrid and distributed energy resources, and developing hardware and real-time simulation testbeds.

We seek a summer intern to join a multi-disciplinary team that researches and develops advanced microgrid control systems for land, sea, air, and space applications. This team developed the Tactical Microgrid Standard (MIL-STD-3071) and uses it as a foundation for much of this work. System designs include component behaviors, key interfaces, and distributed communications and control.

The candidate will perform tasks in conjunction with the broader team’s work such as power system identification and modeling, energy infrastructure information management, power signal processing, microgrid control architecture, energy system cybersecurity, and use case development.  Activities may include analysis, simulation, software development, hardware integration, and presentation.

Candidates who are in the process of earning a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, computer science, or other engineering discipline will be considered.  Exposure to power systems concepts such as equipment dynamics and power flow, application-specific simulation and analysis tools, and challenges such as electric vehicle and renewable energy integration is desired.

Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.

MIT Lincoln Laboratory is an Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, veteran status, disability status, or genetic information; U.S. citizenship is required.
